Part-year worker

A part-year worker, also known as a part-time worker, is an individual who works for an employer on a less-than-full-time basis, typically with a regular pattern of working hours that are fewer than those of a full-time employee. This can include workers who work a fixed number of hours per week or month, but not the standard 35-37 hours per week that is typical of a full-time employee.

In the UK, part-year workers are entitled to the same employment rights as full-time employees under the Employment Rights Act 1996 and subsequent legislation. This includes the right to paid annual leave, statutory sick pay, and protection from unfair dismissal, among other things.

Part-year workers may be employed on a variety of contracts, including zero-hours contracts, which do not guarantee a minimum number of working hours per week or month. However, even under these types of contracts, part-year workers are still entitled to the same employment rights as full-time employees.

It’s worth noting that part-year workers can also include individuals who work on a flexible or compressed hours basis, where they may work longer hours over fewer days, but still have a regular pattern of working hours. The key characteristic of a part-year worker is that their working hours are less than those of a full-time employee.

In terms of rotas and scheduling, employers must take into account the needs and preferences of part-year workers when creating rota systems, ensuring that they receive fair and reasonable treatment in terms of working hours and rest periods.

AceRota’s ability to track varying hours worked by part-year workers, calculate holiday entitlements based on pro-rata hours, and generate rotas that take into account fluctuating staff numbers can assist in managing these employees more efficiently.
