Shift pattern

A shift pattern refers to a predetermined schedule of working hours and days off for employees within an organisation, typically across a 24-hour period or week. It outlines when staff are required to work, including specific start and finish times, breaks, and rest periods.

In the UK, shift patterns can vary significantly depending on the industry, employer, and type of employment contract. They may be fixed, meaning employees work the same hours every day/week, or rotating, where shifts change periodically, often with a set rotation period.

Shift patterns can also include various types of leave, such as annual leave, bank holidays, and time off in lieu (TOIL), which are factored into an employee’s overall working schedule. The purpose of shift patterns is to ensure adequate staffing levels across all periods, while also considering factors like employee welfare, work-life balance, and compliance with relevant employment laws.

Shift patterns can be categorised into different types, including:

  • Fixed shifts: Employees work the same hours every day/week.
  • Rotating shifts: Shifts change periodically, often with a set rotation period.
  • Split shifts: Employees work two separate periods of time on the same day.
  • Night shifts: Employees work during the night, typically between 6 pm and 6 am.
  • Weekend shifts: Employees work on weekends, which may include Saturdays and/or Sundays.

Here a list of shift patterns.

Employers must ensure that shift patterns comply with relevant employment laws, such as the Working Time Regulations (1998) in the UK. These regulations dictate minimum rest periods, maximum working hours, and paid annual leave entitlements for employees.
